New NUJ Chairman Pledges to Prioritize Journalists’ Welfare

The Zonal Vice President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Zone E, Zare Baba, has charged the newly elected Bauchi State NUJ executives to uphold integrity, accountability and truthfulness in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The Zonal Vice President gave the charge shortly after the inauguration of the new executives at the NUJ Secretariat in Bauchi, where he described the election as free, fair and credible.

Zare Baba also urged the new leadership to promote unity and work in synergy for the growth and development of the union.

The newly elected executives will manage the affairs of the union for the next three years, in line with the provisions of the amended constitution.

Comrade Isah Garba Gadau of BATV emerged as the new NUJ Chairman after defeating Ahmed Mohammed of the Correspondents’ Chapel with 83 votes against Mohammed’s 47 votes

Comrade Isyaka Ismaila Wunti of Glob FM was elected Secretary General with 94 votes, defeating Mu’azu Hassan of NTA, who scored 37 votes, while other positions were returned unopposed.

A total of 141 members were eligible to vote, while 131 were accredited and cast their ballots, with one vote declared invalid.

In their goodwill messages, the General Manager of Glob FM Bauchi, Alqasim Bala, and the Bauchi State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Dauda M. Shu’aibu, congratulated the new executives and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by taking the union to greater heights.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected NUJ Chairman, Comrade Isah Garba Gadau, pledged that his administration would prioritise the welfare, professional training and development, as well as the safety and security of journalists.

He promised to ensure that members are adequately equipped and supported to perform their duties professionally and without fear.

Other elected officials include, Comrade Dajuma Sarki Sale of the Bauchi Radio Corporation, BRC, clinched the position of Vice Chairman, Adama Ibrahim of the Ministry of Information bagged the Treasurer position,
Aliyu Sambo of BATV was elected Assistant Secretary, while Khalid Idris Doya of Leadership Newspaper emerged as Financial Secretary as well as Ibrahim Abubakar Tofa of Glob FM as Auditor of the council.
