Bauchi State House of Assembly has been urged to intensify its advisory role to the state government on the need to support and assist local councils in providing essential amenities to rural communities and local government areas across the state.
The appeal was made by the Chairman of Kirfi Local Government Abdulkadir Umar Dewu when he received members of the state assembly committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs on an oversight visit to the area.
He said improved legislative support is key to enhancing development and improving the lives of people at the grassroots.
Alhaji Abdulkadir Dewu, commended the lawmakers for the visit, describing it as timely and necessary, noted that, Kirfi local government has remained backward in terms of infrastructure and social services, expressing hope that the visit will attract much needed development to the area.
He decried the lack of direct capital project funding from the Ministry for Local Government, despite the existence of a joint account between the state and local governments, saying that funds allocated to the council are mostly used for the day-to-day running the affairs of the council.
Alhaji Dewu also disclosed ongoing efforts by the council in areas of human capital development, empowerment programs, electricity provision, renovation of village head palaces and renovation of solar-powered boreholes.
On his part, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Bala Abdullahi Dan, said the purpose of the visit is to fulfill their constitutional responsibility and assess first hand performance of the local government council.
Bala Dan emphasized the committee’s interest in projects executed under the joint account system and urged the chairman to provide details of all projects undertaken since assuming office, and stressed the importance of improving revenue generation and harmony between council chairman and councillors for effective governance.
