BRC condemns assault on staff journalist, demands immediate investigation.

The Management of the Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC) has condemned the alleged brutal assault on one of its staff journalists, Bashi Adamu, by a security personnel reportedly attached to the State Security Service (SSS) during an official function at the Yankari Game Reserve.

In a statement signed by the organization’s Managing Director, Umar Muhammad Shira, the Management described the incident as barbaric, unacceptable and a serious affront to press freedom, the dignity of the journalism profession and the fundamental rights of a journalist carrying out his legitimate professional duties.

The Corporation acknowledged the constitutional responsibility of security agencies to protect public officials and maintain order during official functions, stressing that, such responsibilities must be discharged within the bounds of the law, professionalism and respect for human rights.

It said security duties should never be used to justify intimidation, harassment or physical assault against journalists performing legitimate assignments.

BRC therefore joined the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, in calling for an immediate, transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Corporation also called for the identification of the officer allegedly involved and appropriate disciplinary action if found culpable, in accordance with the rules and regulations governing the service.

The Management said acts of intimidation, harassment and assault against journalists have no place in a democratic society, stressing that effective democracy requires mutual respect and cooperation among security agencies, government institutions and the media.

BRC expressed solidarity with the affected journalist and assured him and all members of staff of its commitment to protecting their right to perform their professional responsibilities without intimidation, harassment or unlawful interference.

The Corporation further appealed to relevant authorities to strengthen inter-agency coordination and ensure proper briefings and clearly defined protocols on media access during public and official functions.

The Management therefore, reaffirmed BRC’s commitment to press freedom, professional journalism, human dignity and democratic accountability, and urged all government institutions and security agencies to uphold these principles.
