Bauchi State Assembly seeks urgent action on flooding, bad roads in Katagum
By Rabiu Ishaq Muhammad:
The Bauchi State House of Assembly has been urged to call on the State Government to construct standard storm water drainage systems and rehabilitate critical road networks in Katagum Town, Zaki Local Government Area, to address flooding and improve the living conditions of residents.
The call was made by the Member representing Katagum Constituency, Bello Muhammed Maiwa, while presenting a motion before the House, highlighting the need for urgent intervention to protect lives and property, improve transportation and strengthen socio economic activities in the area.
Bello Maiwa noted that recurring flooding, inadequate drainage facilities and the deteriorating condition of roads had continued to threaten residential buildings, farmlands, roads and other public infrastructure, while disrupting commercial activities and causing hardship to residents.
He explained that the situation had also increased transportation and vehicle maintenance costs, as well as restricted access to essential services, including markets, schools and healthcare facilities.
The lawmaker further stressed that properly designed and maintained drainage systems were necessary to prevent erosion, protect roads from water damage and reduce the frequent deterioration of public infrastructure, particularly during the rainy season.
He warned that failure to address the challenges could worsen the impact of seasonal rainfall and increase the cost of future infrastructure rehabilitation.
Bello Maiwa further urged the State Government, through the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies, to construct standard storm water drainage channels in flood prone areas of Katagum Town and rehabilitate roads severely damaged by flooding, erosion and prolonged deterioration.
He also called for the regular maintenance and desilting of existing drainage channels to ensure the free flow of storm water, alongside adequate budgetary provision for the proposed projects.
Seconding the motion, member Representing Chinade/Madara constituency Dr. Nasiru Ahmed Ala added that the motion is aimed at mitigating flooding, improving road connectivity, safeguarding public infrastructure and promoting sustainable development in Katagum Town.
