By Amina Umar
The Emir of Gamawa, Alhaji Adamu Abdulkadir Adamu, has commended the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Bauchi State Chapter, for its efforts to address the growing threat of desert encroachment in the Katagum zone.
The Emir made the commendation when a delegation of FOMWAN led by its State Amirah, Hajiya Lami Umar Hassan, paid a visit to his palace in Gamawa.
Alhaji Adamu Abdulkadir Adamu said the initiative came at the right time, particularly following the destruction caused by windstorms in Gamawa town during this year’s rainy season.
He said the traditional institution had also planned to embark on tree planting before the end of the rainy season as part of efforts to protect the environment and mitigate the effects of climate change.
The Emir assured the delegation that the trees donated by FOMWAN would be planted in homes and other suitable locations to help check desert encroachment and promote environmental sustainability.
Earlier, the State Amirah of FOMWAN, Hajiya Lami Umar Hassan, said the delegation visited the palace to congratulate the Emir on his appointment and support efforts to combat desert encroachment through tree planting.
The delegation also visited the Chairman of Gamawa Local Government Area, who was represented by the Acting Director of Administration and General Services, Alhaji Ahmad Hamza.
Alhaji Hamza said the visit had strengthened the local government’s efforts, as tree planting was already part of its plans.
He assured the delegation that the council would work with FOMWAN in Gamawa to ensure the initiative was successfully implemented.
Hajiya Lami Umar Hassan explained that although, the number of trees donated was modest, the gesture was intended to encourage communities to embrace tree planting and environmental protection.
To this end, FOMWAN contributed about 300 tree seedlings for planting across Dambam, Katagum, Zaki and Gamawa Local Government Areas of Bauchi State.
