Women Affairs Commissioner urges women to engage in politics

By Maisaje Mamuda Wakili:

The Bauchi State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Child Development, Dr Lydia Haruna Tsammani, has urged women to participate in politics and challenge barriers limiting their participation in political decision-making in Nigeria.

Dr Tsammani made the call in an exclusive interview with our reporter on the relatively narrow gender gap in the INEC 2027 national register, where male voters number fifty three million, five hundred and twenty eight thousand, two hundred and eighteen while female voters total forty nine million, nine hundred thousand, four hundred and ninety seven

She said women must actively engage in politics, governance and decision-making, stressing that their inclusion is critical to building an inclusive society.

The Commissioner urged women not to wait for invitations to leadership positions but to persistently engage men and challenge structures that exclude them from positions of influence.

Dr Lydia Tsammani noted that women are often mobilised to build political movements but sidelined when positions of influence and decision-making are allocated.

She commended Governor Bala Mohammed for his political leadership that creates opportunities for women to contribute their quota to the development of Bauchi State.
