Bauchi Speaker Condemns Darazo Farmers-Herders Clash, Calls for Dialogue and Justice

The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Dr Abubakar Y. Suleiman, has condemned the recent farmers-herders clash in Lanzai community of Darazo Local Government Area, describing the incident as unfortunate and detrimental to the peace and development being enjoyed in the state.

In a statement issued to journalists in Bauchi by his spokesperson, Muktar Garba Kobi, the Speaker expressed concern over the violence and urged both farmers and herders to embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence rather than resorting to self-help measures that could further escalate tensions.

Dr Abubakar noted that taking the law into one’s hands would only deepen divisions and undermine the longstanding cordial relationship between the two groups.

He stressed that farmers and herders are interdependent and must work together to sustain economic growth and social harmony in their communities.

According to him, Bauchi State’s strength lies in its diversity and unity, adding that any conflict affecting one segment of society ultimately impacts the entire state.

The Speaker called on security agencies to act swiftly and impartially to restore normalcy in the affected area and ensure that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice.

He also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders and religious leaders to intensify grassroots mediation efforts and sensitise residents on the importance of peace, tolerance and mutual respect.

The Speaker assured that members of the State Assembly would continue to enact laws and engage relevant stakeholders to promote lasting peace across the state.

He further reaffirmed the commitment of the Bauchi State House of Assembly to supporting government policies and programmes aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence, including the establishment of grazing reserves, ranching initiatives and conflict-resolution committees.

On behalf of the members and staff of the Assembly, the Speaker extended his condolences to families of those who lost their lives in the clash and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
