The Bauchi State Government has announced the immediate suspension of commercial activities in selected cattle markets across Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi, and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas.
The decision, approved by the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, is part of efforts to address rising security challenges linked to the operation of some cattle markets in the affected areas.
The directive was contained in a statement signed by Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor.
The affected markets include Alkaleri, Mansur, Futuk, Yalo, Gwana, Yalon Gurza, Kuka, Rimi, Pali, Bokwas, Kwaimawa, Mai-Ari, Gajin Duguri, Maina Ma’aji; Liman Katagum; Lariski, Bara, Sharfuri (night market), Cheledi, Boli; as well as Burga, Bununu, Ball, Kulumbo and Zwall.
The government stated that the measure was necessitated by security concerns, noting that some of the markets have been exploited by criminal elements to facilitate cattle rustling, kidnapping, killings, extortion, arms exchange, and illicit financial activities.
According to the statement, the continued operation of those markets has posed serious threats to public safety, disrupted food supply chains, and caused significant economic losses to traders and surrounding communities.
The suspension is described as a temporary measure that will remain in effect until the security situation improves significantly.
Security agencies have been directed to enforce full compliance, while local government authorities and traditional institutions including, Emirs, District Heads, and Village Heads, are tasked with sensitizing residents and ensuring strict monitoring of the directive.
