USAID and Bauchi Assembly partners to promote good governance.

The United States for improved governance in the USAID’s State Accountability, Transparency & Effectiveness (State2State) Activity and the Bauchi State House of Assembly have vowed to sustain partnership in promoting good governance.

Contributing to a discussion with the USAID team and the state lawmakers, the speaker of the assembly Abubakar Y. Suleiman said the partnership will help to improve financial management system which will include, budget planning, budget transparency, internal control and financial reporting and debt management among others.

He assured the partner that the state tenth assembly is committed to promoting good governance for the benefit of citizens of the state.

Represented by his deputy Jamilu Umaru Dahiru, the speaker informed the USAID team that the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed has already introduced various public service reforms to improve fiscal discipline in public procurement, debt management and implementation of fiscal responsibility law and practises reflected in the state’s budget processes.

According to him, the move was to eliminate and block leakages and limit waste in recurrent and capital budgets.

Abubakar Sulaiman said all the necessary measures have been put in place by the state government to enhance accountability, reduced corrupt practices and ensured fiscal discipline in public service in the state.

In their separate remarks, the chairmen State assembly committees on education, health and Water Resources pledged the readiness of the state tenth assembly in maintaining the cordial relations with various donors, multilateral bodies and organizations to improve service delivery in the three critical sectors of education, health and WASH.

On her part, the Acting Director Education USAID Nigeria Mariam Britel Swift said ensuring transparency in Bauchi state means providing clear and easy understandable information about government activities and policies, saying this will allow citizens to hold their leaders accountable and actively participate in the governance process.

Also speaking, the State to state coordinator USAID Nigeria Machil Maxwell said prioritizing transparency and accountability in governance, Bauchi state can build a more efficient and trustworthy govt that serves the best interests of its citizens.
